Canon has created a new 250-megapixel APS-H sensor and it is slightly bigger than the APS-C which is pretty common in DSLRs. On the other hand, the new 250-Megapixel sensor is in fact smaller than the full-frame sensors used in the professional cameras. Apart from Megapixels, its the sensor size that affects camera performance, a 8-Megapixel camera fitted in a 1/4 sensor is not equal to the 8-Megapixel fitted into a 1/2 sensor. The larger surface area of the sensor allows it to capture more light, translating into well-lit photographs even in low light conditions. That being said, it sets us wondering how Canon managed to squeeze in 250-Megapixel, that too in a DSLR sensor. The new APS-H sensor has in fact set a world record for resolution in its size category and if the Canon release is to be believed the sensor is blessed imaging ability to distinguish lettering’s on the side of the airplane from as far as 18 KM. Canon maintains that the sensor has a good noise performance in spite of having a fast signal readout of 1.25 billion pixels/sec. Contextually speaking, the 250-Megapixel sensor is 30 times sharper than the 4k, and 125 times sharper than HD, literally. We are looking at 19,580 x 12,600 pixels pictures here. Don’t expect Canon to fit the new sensor into a DSLR and start selling it right away, it will take some time for the technology to trickle down and make it to consumer DSLRs. Till then, the new sensor will find a place for itself in ultra-high resolution tools used for surveillance and other related industries.
