Camera

It’s almost certain that you have never employed every single camera mode available on your phone. Huawei thinks there’s a better way to put them into action. The Mate 10 thus comes with machine learning embedded in the camera app. What this does is essentially recognize the type of scene you are trying to capture and adjust the settings automatically. To be fair, Asus had done something similar with its ZenFone range few years back, but we expect Huawei to have perfected the technology in 2017.

Better Resource Allocation

The Mate 10 also learns and builds a model of your behavior as you use the phone every day. With this data, the phone accordingly allocates resources in the background. The process is entirely carried out on the device itself. Hence, nothing is being shared with Huawei’s servers. At least, that’s what the company said on stage today. We will find out more once the device goes on sale. Huawei says that the primary rationale for including this is for ensuring the phone’s performance does not lose its shine after a year or a couple of months of use. Of course, it’s worth mentioning they did last year as well. However, with a dedicated chip this time, I expect predictions to be dramatically better.

Real-time Translation

The Mate 10 features a native integration of the Microsoft Translator app. Therefore, once you enable and configure it, you will be suggested translations when, for instance, you point the camera towards a foreign sign. The feature functions in real-time meaning you don’t have to wait for it to process the data first.

Contextual Suggestions

The new Neural Processing Unit, NPU for short, also looks for various actions to recommend settings. For example, if you are reading a book, the phone will suggest turning on the Eye Comfort mode (Huawei’s blue light filter). Or, when taking a picture of a business card, the NPU will offer to scan the details into your phone book.

Call and Mic Improvements

Huawei has also extended AI algorithms to your phone calls. The enhancements will improve the microphone’s inputs no matter how quietly or softly you speak. The function even improves the call audio if you’re standing a bit far from the phone and talking through the speaker mode.

Notifications

Lastly, there are a few machine learning tricks integrated with the notification system. The Mate 10 will try to predict the type of alert you’ve received and accordingly, offer to launch the app in split-screen mode if required. For instance, an alarm going off won’t trigger the option, but a text message or a Skype call will. If you begin ignoring the option, the Mate 10 will disable it all together over time. Those were some of the best machine learning features the Mate 10 comes with. To know more about the phone itself, you can head over to this post.
